llo Google Mail available, but not yet in France
Allo Google Mail available, but not yet in France
From then this morning, Google began the release of its new email application, Allo. The deployment does not respect everyone, especially in France. Features are those presented during the Google I / O, including Assistant who wants support the user in appropriate judged times.
Allo is a challenging application, especially because it is very far from being the first in this area. Not only competition is fierce with solutions such as Messenger, WhatsApp, Viber, Line or Telegram, but it is not the first attempt by Google. The company has already proposed long Gchat, not to mention Hangouts, which is also not retired.
Retried in an already crowded market
But what he really had to Google to engage fully in this sector, is an application for simple configuration and do not require a particular account. A model set of the competition that has the base needs the phone number.
That's all it takes to use Allo, whether Android or iOS, even if we can educate their Google Account. The latter will then go retrieve data in connected services, as events in Calendar or snapshots in Photos.
Overall, it is in the presence of conventional messaging solution. So we exchange text with one or more persons. We can obviously create groups and share attachments. Allo automatically compares its phonebook with the user to bring together those who have also the application. A permit is also required for access.
Google Assistant, the virtual butler
Allo that proposes to differentiate from others? First the flagship feature wizard. Presented at the Google I / O conference, it is a "chatbox" a robot using an artificial intelligence suspicion as a service to the user.
In a conversation, spontaneously and Assistant can provide information based on what you say. If he reads a question and includes the user has a question about a particular subject, it can propose to launch a search (on Google of course) and provide the outcome that seems most suitable.
For now, Assistant remains generally fairly quiet, the goal is not to continually interrupt the user. However, it can "talk" directly Assistant enthroned as the first contact in the list. then we can ask him questions, for example asking where the nearest Chinese restaurants.
In a typical conversation this type of result will also be visible by the correspondent, the idea being to help with joint decision making. Articles, weather, traffic, sports scores and other part of his remit.
Note that Google Assistant is currently in a state of Preview, ie beta. It is therefore not is a finalized product. It may encounter errors or giving poor quality results. improvement we imagine that will come gradually, user requests to refine its operation. Google wants to then incorporate into other products, including its home terminal for the management of home automation.
Suggested responses and inevitable stickers
Allo also offers the Smart Reply (Suggested answer), one already proposed in Inbox feature. The principle is exactly the same: to provide ready answers adapted to each situation.
If they ask you where you are, you can for example respond manually or with a geographical location, a photograph of the place, etc. Practice, the function can also give a sense of "prison" in strength to meet what looks like multiple choice, not to mention the unpleasant aspect of feeling "predictable."
When users are in control, they can of course write what they want. And no mail application would now considered "modern" if it offered some fun features in the process. We can send stickers, 25 packs are available now.
By dragging the send button up or down, you can also enlarge or reduce text or emoji. As with Snapchat, the user can edit and write on a photo before sending.
Encryption: we must choose between functionality and security
As for safety, the situation had already been addressed. If the user wants to use functions such as Smart Wizard or reply, it will have to settle the classical encryption of conversations. In other words, the information is encrypted during transit between the user and Google's servers and vice versa.
The editor must be able to read the exchanges in order to position its services. They are stored by the editor, which will allow it to respond to requests made by law enforcement and the intelligence community. This in spite of support for Microsoft which has just filed suit against American justice about it.
For those who have no use of services offered, there is the Incognito mode. Therefore, encryption is end-to-end, data is encrypted before leaving the smartphone and Google could (normally) not read data. However, Allo offers not suddenly nothing special if we generalize such a function.
WhatsApp, by far the most used messaging application (after Messenger, gradually become independent) generalized this protection including for groups, audio and video calls. Allo will also propose any recent (Duo, already available, just load the video, but head to head only). In absolute terms, the two services use the protocol signal, increasingly popular to add an encryption layer on mobile communications.
Note that Edward Snowden, who had already shown his skepticism there several months Hello, just returned to the charge: he simply recommended not to use the application to Google.
The application is expected in France
Everyone will obviously be his own idea when Allo will actually be available. Even if we can get through the back door (easy with Android APK recovery on third party sites), it is indeed not released in France at the moment.
According to the note from Google, the deployment is underway and will be completed in the coming days. In other words, the finish remains forthcoming. We will update this news with the download links when they are active. Note that the Android plug however allows pre-register to receive an alert when the application will be available .
