Samsung finally explains why the Galaxy Note 7 explodes

Koh Dong-jin, responsable de la division mobile de Samsung Electronics.

- After several months of investigations, the Korean group makes its conclusions. The two successive generations of batteries used had design defects.

These are the batteries. After several months of technical investigation, the college of engineers of Samsung made its conclusions. A flaw in the design of the Galaxy Note 7 batteries is at the origin of the explosions that made headlines in August and September. The group also took the opportunity to apologize to its clients for the "inconvenience caused". Samsung has recalled "several million" terminals (the Korean has never communicated the exact figure). Some 3.06 million of Note 7 were recalled, accounting for 96% of terminals sold. Samsung has spent 4.88 billion euros of exceptional charge to face this event.

Une des raisons expliquant les explosions de Galaxy Note 7.

For his explanations, Samsung went from one extreme to the other. After being absent subscribers for several weeks last summer, he decided to shed all light on the deal with strong graphics and details. The shape of the electrodes of the first generation of battery caused the first combustions. The top of the negative electrodes was curved - it should have been straight - and, aggravating phenomenon, located in the curved upper part of the phone. The negative electrodes were therefore too close to the positive, creating overheating. The second generation of batteries, put into production after the first fires of phones in August, also had design flaws. The insulation layer was too thin (or even absent in some phones) and the positive contact too close to the negative.

The release of the Galaxy S8 postponed?

Rendering cautiously, Samsung could shift the launch of its new smartphone, the Galaxy S8, which was expected for February 26, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The group has introduced new quality control procedures. Eight new checkpoints have been introduced, including loading-unloading, dismantling, durability ... The Korean has set up a battery advisory group consisting of researchers and academics from all walks of life (Cambridge, Berkeley, Stanford). With this new structure, it wants to improve the quality of its lithium-ion batteries and believes that its advances "will benefit the entire industry".

However, Samsung's annual results should not suffer from this mishap. From the beginning of the year and its press conference at the CES in Las Vegas, the group's leaders suggested that growth would be at the rendezvous. Sales of the Galaxy S7 far surpassed those of the S6, while the other divisions, particularly TV and household appliances, showed a very good performance, not to mention the semiconductors, also rising. The group will unveil its annual results on January 24th in the morning, Paris time.
